Peter Thiel, Rome, and the Theology of Power

Peter Thiel arrived in Rome the week of March 16, 2026, for a series of invitation-only, NDA-protected lectures on the Antichrist. Recording devices were forbidden. The Angelicum disowned it. Catholic University of America distanced itself. Thiel's car was photographed at Palazzo Taverna. The question is not what he believes. The question is who he was talking to, and why now.

The Subject
Peter Thiel
PayPal · Palantir · Founders Fund
Co-founded PayPal in 1998, Palantir in 2003. His 2007 essay "The Straussian Moment" — an explicitly esoteric document — laid out a political theology grounded in René Girard, Carl Schmitt, and Leo Strauss. He believes liberal democracy is incompatible with freedom. He has shaped JD Vance's intellectual formation. He runs a surveillance company contracted by ICE. He is now giving secret theological lectures steps from the Vatican.

Cluny Institute · Catholic University of America
Entrepreneur-in-Residence at CUA's Ciocca Center. Author of Wanting — a popular Girard primer. Runs the Cluny Institute, funded by a Templeton Foundation grant. Co-organized both the September 2025 San Francisco series and the Rome lectures. Was on paternity leave during Rome — his deputy Jordan Castro handled press. The intellectual bridge between Thiel's theology and institutional Catholic America.

The Angelicum
Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas · Rome
The original planned venue for Thiel's Rome lectures. When word leaked, the Angelicum publicly disowned the event. The same institution where a young priest named Robert Prevost — now Pope Leo XIV — wrote his doctoral thesis. The Angelicum's disavowal came fast and with unusual precision. The Catholic University of America followed immediately. Both distanced themselves from the event before it happened.

John Templeton Foundation · Religion-Science Interface
Presents as a neutral religion-science bridge institution. Funds the Cluny Institute that co-organized Thiel's lectures. Also funds Yoram Hazony's theological work — Hazony who organized NatCon 1 where Thiel keynoted, and who is cited as an intellectual influence on JD Vance. The same foundation runs underneath both the Rome lectures and the nationalist intellectual infrastructure simultaneously. This is not coincidence.

The Media Platform
Bari Weiss
The Free Press · Columbia · Shalem Center
After the 2024 election, Thiel gave The Free Press an interview advising how JD Vance could win the 2028 presidency. He used Weiss's platform to publicly shape the succession plan. Weiss trained at Yoram Hazony's Shalem Center in Israel. The Free Press is the media infrastructure for the broader network Thiel helped build politically. Weiss provides the platform; Thiel provides the signal.

Irving Kristol
Godfather of Neoconservatism · Stanford Review Funder
Kristol provided the original funding for the Stanford Review in 1987 — the year Thiel co-founded it. The ideological lineage is encoded from day one: neoconservative money, Straussian intellectual framework, elite recruitment through a student newspaper. Three Palantir co-founders came through the Review. Thiel still hosts dinners for Review staffers, discussing world events and politics — more openly than he talks to the public.

The Straussian Moment Published
Thiel publishes his defining essay — an explicitly esoteric document drawing on Girard, Schmitt, and Strauss. He argues that liberal democracy is incompatible with freedom. He praises Strauss's method of writing for two audiences simultaneously: truth for the worthy, concealment for the vulgar. This is the theological and political architecture that the Rome lectures later deploy.

Trump RNC Speech · JD Vance Formation
Thiel speaks at the Republican National Convention — the only Silicon Valley figure to back Trump publicly. His mentorship of JD Vance deepens. He funds Vance's Senate campaign with $15 million. The Straussian theology begins to reach the political executive.

From the Straussian Moment · 2007
"The good city is not the inclusive, multicultural city of liberals but the homogeneous city of people who have embraced a common good."
Peter Thiel · The Straussian Moment · 2007
"The lectures are not just lectures. They are an influence operation. The theology is the product. The audience is the target. The NDAs and the secrecy aren't modesty — they are the architecture of esoteric dissemination that Thiel explicitly praises in his own essay."
